If you ask a client in the construction industry whether safety is important to them, the answer is always: “Yes, of course!”
If you then follow up with the question: “And how do you fulfil your statutory duty of care under health and safety legislation?”, you will often be met with a counter-question. This is a sign that they don't know and sometimes also that they want to know more about it.
Safety first
Safety always comes first in every construction project. To find out whether this is really the case, you can use a Safety Walk as a “measuring tool”. We regularly carry out Safety Walks for clients at construction sites. These walks assess the progress of the project and/or whether health and safety have been taken into account in the design process.
It is very important for a client to be actively involved in the design phase and implementation. During the design phase, we contribute to drawing up and/or assessing the health and safety plan. We carefully consider all risks so that we make the right choices in the design. We also identify the measures to be taken. This is an important part of realising a construction project in a safe and healthy manner. In this way, we work with the client to ensure a safe workplace during implementation.
The Working Conditions Act obliges the client to check whether work on the construction project is being carried out safely. This is known as the duty of care. The client must actively assess the risks and determine which measures are being taken to ensure safe and healthy working conditions.
In addition, the client checks whether the design is safe, whether the parties involved are competent and/or whether everyone complies with the safety rules. The client also stays informed about the working conditions and monitors them continuously to limit risks.
A Safety Walk helps with this inspection, allowing the client to see whether everything is being done safely and how it is being carried out.
During the tour of the construction site in the implementation phase, we carefully check whether the Health and Safety Plan is being properly adhered to. We check whether the risks on the construction site are being properly managed.
The Safety Walk always ends with a comprehensive report in which we record our findings. This ensures that the client can make adjustments and gain more control over health and safety during the construction process.
Safety is not a side issue, but a basic requirement for good client management and a successful project.
